My friend in India is an unflagging investigative reporter who has written on terrorism and authored a book on a war. Sport is on the lowest rungs of her ladder of interests. LeBron James she’s never heard of. Lewis Hamilton? Sorry. Dominic Thiem? Nope.

Yet mention cricket and she’ll rattle off rules, expound on yesterday’s Indian Premier League match and rubbish your opinion. Suddenly she’s a hand-waving, hardcore sports fan.
